The Chinese team wins gold again in the Fashion Technology event at the 48th WorldSkills Competition
On the evening of September 27, the 48th WorldSkills Competition concluded in Shanghai. The Chinese delegation achieved 41 gold, 11 silver, and 4 bronze medals, along with 6 Excellence Awards, ranking first in both the gold medal tally and the overall team scores for the fifth time, marking the best results since their participation. In the highly anticipated fashion technology event, 21-year-old contestant Yu Na from Beijing Polytechnic Technician College won the gold medal, helping the Chinese team achieve a ‘five consecutive championships’ in this category.
Since Hu Ping won China’s first gold medal in the fashion technology event at the 44th WorldSkills Competition in 2017, Wen Caiyun, Dong Qing, and Zhou Qinfai subsequently topped the podium in later competitions, completing the accumulation from zero to a ‘four consecutive championships’.
It is reported that the adjustment to the competition format of the Fashion Technology category in this year’s contest is the most industry-discussed change on the path to achieving a ‘five-time consecutive championship.’ The competition topics this year have been comprehensively upgraded, breaking away from the previous fixed formats and designated design requirements. Instead, a ‘blind box’ style rule is adopted, where contestants only know the basic direction before the competition, while the specific design categories and style scenarios are revealed on-site.
As a result, contestants are no longer competing to see who can execute faster or more accurately within a known framework. They are required to independently complete series design positioning, silhouette selection, and process planning after receiving the fabrics and understanding the theme, greatly testing their on-the-spot adaptability, independent design capability, market insight, and overall creative skills.
