How stunning are Uzbekistan’s traditional textiles? An up-close experience of the Margilan Silk Culture Festival

On September 17 local time, the three-day Silk Culture Festival opened in Margilan, Uzbekistan. The event showcased the long-standing local silk weaving tradition through traditional silk fabrics, ethnic costumes, and handicrafts.

According to the organizers, Margilan has a history of over 2,000 years and is famous for silk production and traditional silk and cotton weaving techniques. The locally produced traditional fabrics are colorful and richly patterned, making them an important part of Uzbekistan’s traditional textile culture.

At the cultural festival, traditional fabrics, clothing, and handicrafts with various patterns and colors attracted many visitors to stop and take a closer look. Local artisans also demonstrated traditional weaving techniques on site, allowing visitors to gain an up-close understanding of the local weaving culture.

The cultural festival was held at a newly opened cultural tourism complex in the area this year. Covering approximately 35 hectares, the complex adopts the local traditional architectural style and includes functional spaces such as historical and cultural exhibitions, traditional handicraft workshops, and tourism services.

Not far from the complex, at a “Craftsmen Center,” visitors can observe the weaving process of traditional fabrics up close, with various finished products on display. Visitors can learn about local traditional weaving techniques and their applications in clothing, carpets, and other products.

According to the center’s director, the center has multiple branches in the surrounding areas, with over 700 craftsmen involved in production, many of whom still weave at home. In addition, the center applies traditional fabrics to modern clothing design and can currently produce more than 100 types of clothing and related products, some of which are exported overseas.
